An inn for sailors. A boathouse for senior sailors is called a funayado, while a small inn for sailors is called a koyado. The facilities were necessary to provide rest for the crew of ships that came to port to load and unload luggage or wait for the wind, and also supplied them with food, fuel, and fishing materials. As their business expanded, they gained influence over ship wholesalers, shippers, and shipowners, and they even formed chains. In addition to this, shops that provided boats for fishing and boating were also called funayado. The famous funayado in Edo became resting places for Yoshiwara visitors who used boat services, and also became places of entertainment for Fukagawa geisha. Both types of funayado fell into rapid decline after the Meiji period with the introduction of motorized ships and the development of land transportation, but only funayados for fishing customers remained.
