Sea slater (English spelling)
A crustacean of the isopod family Ligamentidae (illustration). It is terrestrial and commonly found on the rocky shores of southern Japan. It is found in various places south of Honshu, as well as on both the eastern and western coasts of China and North America. Its body is large and spindle-shaped, about 3-4 cm long, and when alive it is dark blue, blackish brown, or yellowish brown, changing color depending on the brightness of the substrate. It has 7 thoracic segments, 6 abdominal segments, and a long, rod-like tail at the rear end that is about 2/3 of the body length. The first antennae are made up of 3 segments and are very short and small.

等脚目フナムシ科の甲殻類(イラスト)。陸生で,日本南部の磯にごくふつうに見られる。本州以南の各地のほか,中国,北アメリカ大陸の東西両岸にも分布している。体は紡錘形,大型で,体長3~4cmくらい,生きているときは暗青色,黒褐色あるいは黄褐色をしており,基盤の色の明暗によって体色を変化させる。胸部7節,腹部6節,体後端に体長の2/3くらいの長い棒状の尾肢がある。第1触角は3節よりなり,非常に短く小さい。
