Hidekata Funahashi

A nobleman of the Azuchi-Momoyama and early Edo periods. The eldest son of Kiyohara Kunikata. In February 1602 (Keicho 7), he was awarded the title of Doctor Myotsu-ken. In August 1603 (Keicho 9), he was appointed Shikibu Shoyu and awarded the rank of Junior Fifth Rank. In January 1615 (Keicho 18), he was awarded the rank of Junior Fourth Rank. During this time, on February 24, 1616, he was ordered to change his name from Takakura to Funahashi. He was a great scholar who served as a tutor to Emperor Goyozei and Emperor Gomizunoo, and was well versed in Japanese literature such as classical Chinese and linked verse. He also had the skill to print with wooden movable type, and printed the Kobun Kokei himself. Although he was a low-ranking nobleman, he used his talent to maintain relationships with many people, including Tokugawa Ieyasu, and was one of the 22 nobles who were close to Ieyasu. His diary includes the Keicho Nichikenroku (Japanese Classics Complete Works Publishing Society).

安土桃山・江戸前期の公家。清原国賢の長男。慶長7(1602)年2月明経博士。同9年8月式部少輔に任じられ,従五位に叙せられた。同18年1月従四位。この間,同6年2月24日それまで称していた高倉を舟橋と改名するよう申し付けられた。後陽成天皇,後水尾天皇の侍読を務めた碩学で漢文,連歌など国文学に通暁していた。また,木製による活字印刷の技術を持ち,自ら『古文孝経』などを印刷している。下級の公家であるが,自らの才能を生かし徳川家康を始め多くの人々と交流を保っており,家康昵懇の公家衆22人のうちのひとりである。日記に『慶長日件録』(日本古典全集刊行会)がある。
