Year of death: June 28, 1614 (August 3, 1614) Year of birth: Tensho 3 (1575) A nobleman of the Azuchi-Momoyama and early Edo periods. The eldest son of Kiyohara Kunikata. In February 1602 (Keicho 7), he was awarded the title of Doctor Myotsu-ken. In August 1603 (Keicho 9), he was appointed Shikibu Shoyu and awarded the rank of Junior Fifth Rank. In January 1615 (Keicho 18), he was awarded the rank of Junior Fourth Rank. During this time, on February 24, 1616, he was ordered to change his name from Takakura to Funahashi. He was a great scholar who served as a tutor to Emperor Goyozei and Emperor Gomizunoo, and was well versed in Japanese literature such as classical Chinese and linked verse. He also had the skill to print with wooden movable type, and printed the Kobun Kokei himself. Although he was a low-ranking nobleman, he used his talent to maintain relationships with many people, including Tokugawa Ieyasu, and was one of the 22 nobles who were close to Ieyasu.
