It is an Indo-European language with approximately 14 million speakers, mainly in the state of Assam, India. Along with Oriya, Bihari, and Bengali, it is part of the eastern group of the Indo-Aryan languages of India. Grammatically, it is most similar to Bengali. In terms of vocabulary and phonology, it has been influenced by Tibetan and Burmese. Written records date back to around the 13th century.
