Boatmen's Group

Japanese: 船手組 - ふなてぐみ

The Edo Shogunate's official organization for guards. Navy. It was established in 1632 (Kan'ei 9). There were five groups (with occasional increases and decreases), and each group had one head (under the control of the young councilor, 700 koku of government revenue, formal uniform, and azalea room), and 30-40 or more Kako (manager of the water), sometimes as many as 80, and sometimes as many as 130 (20 koku of government revenue, two stipends, Imperial audience, and below). It was abolished in 1862 (Bunkyu 2). The head was placed under the rank of Kinshi-nami, and the doshin under the control of the Gunkanbugyo. In peacetime, they managed government ships, and the ship's head was replaced by two every year, and they sometimes patrolled the ports of Shikoku and Kyushu.

江戸幕府番方の職制。水軍。制度上確立したのは1632年(寛永9)である。定数は5組(ときに増減あり)で，各組に頭1人(若年寄支配，役高700石，布衣，躑躅間詰)，水主（かこ）同心30～40人以上，多いもの80余人，ときに130人(役高20俵二人扶持，御目見以下，御抱場)があった。1862年(文久2)廃止となる。頭は勤仕並，同心は軍艦奉行支配となった。平時は官船を管理し，船手頭は毎年2人ずつ交替して，四国，九州の浦々の巡視にあたったこともある。
