The word "mosaic" comes from the nine Muses of Greek mythology, and was called opus musivum in Latin.

In the southernmost part of Mesopotamia, the temple of Uruk (late 4th millennium BC) features mosaic decorations of geometric patterns made of small pieces of terracotta on pillars and other parts. In Egypt, the walls of pyramid tombs were sometimes decorated with colored tiles (Saqqara, Step Pyramid of Djoser, late 27th century BC).
