[Eri fisheries in Japan]
The origins of the eri fishing industry on Lake Biwa are unclear, but it probably dates back to ancient times. In Oshimasho, Gamo County, Omi, there is a document issued by the Kamakura Shogunate's Mandokoro in 1241 (Ninji 2), which forbade the construction of new eri and prohibited the long-standing dispute over the establishment of eri. There is also a preamble issued in 1298 (Einin 6) in response to a petition by Oshima Shrine in the same shogunate, prohibiting the construction of eri by local people. This shows that eri made for the offerings of sacred offerings from influential shrines and eri made by local people existed side by side.
