A plateau in the Andes that stretches from northern Argentina to Chile. 3,000-5,000m above sea level. 23°-27° south latitude. "Puna" means "highland where altitude sickness is likely" in Quechua, and there are also areas in Bolivia and Peru that are called this. There is almost no rain, so only sparse vegetation can be seen in the valley bottoms. Cone-shaped volcanoes of about 6,000m high stand tall, and salt accumulates in the low depressions on the plateau, called "Salars." The Trans-Andean Railway has been running from Salta in Argentina to Antofagasta on the Pacific coast of Chile since 1948, but the dryness and cold make it impossible for grass to grow as livestock feed, and it has become a sparsely populated desert.
