Kyohoshu - Kyohoshu

A Zen monk in the early Muromachi period. Born in Sanuki (Kagawa Prefecture). His father was from the Saeki clan. Due to the turmoil in the country, his father fled to Hokuetsu, and he went to Kyoto with his mother. He learned Confucianism from his grandfather. When he was 12 years old, his grandfather died, and due to poverty, his mother made him a servant at Tofukuji Temple. He studied haircuts under Ryogen Shoshun at Ankokuji Temple in Yamashiro for eight years, and thereafter traveled to various temples in Kamakura and Suo (Yamaguchi Prefecture), and also studied Nara Buddhism. He returned to Tofukuji Temple at the age of 29, and at the age of 43 became the chief priest of Dofukuji Temple in his hometown of Sanuki. He later went to Kyoto again and lived at Tofukuji Temple, Tenryu-ji Temple, and Nanzen-ji Temple. He was a devoted follower of Yoshimochi Ashikaga and was well known for his poetry and literary arts. His collection of poems and prose, "Fuji Iko," is available in three volumes, and his collection of excerpts, "Fuji Hekigan Sho," is available.

室町前期の禅僧。讃岐(さぬき)(香川県)の人。父は佐伯(さえき)氏。国の騒乱のため父は北越へ出奔し、母とともに上洛(じょうらく)。祖父に儒学を学んだ。12歳のとき祖父は死に、母は貧困のため彼を東福寺の侍童とした。山城安国寺の霊源性浚(りょうげんしょうしゅん)のもとで薙髪(ちはつ)して8年間親炙(しんしゃ)し、以後鎌倉、周防(すおう)(山口県)の諸寺を巡り、南都仏教にも学んだ。29歳で東福寺に帰り、43歳で故郷讃岐の道福寺の住持となった。のちまた上洛して東福寺、天竜寺、南禅寺に住した。足利義持(あしかがよしもち)の帰依厚く、詩文学芸に名が高かった。詩文集『不二(ふじ)遺稿』3巻、抄物(しょうもの)『不二碧岩(へきがん)抄』などがある。
