Secondary surveillance radar

...To extend the reach, they are usually installed on mountaintops with few obstacles, and their effective range covers 180 to 370 km horizontally and about 25 km altitude. They are also called secondary surveillance radars (SSRs, short for secondary surveillance radar). SSRs receive radio responses from aircraft in response to an interrogation wave they send out and display the results on a radar panel. They are used to control aircraft entering and leaving airports, but recently some radars have been designed to digitally display aircraft identification, direction, ground speed, altitude, etc., and to alert air traffic controllers to aircraft on a collision course.
