Sakuradamon Incident - Sakuradamon Incident

Sakuradamon Incident - Sakuradamon Incident

An attempted assassination of Emperor Showa occurred on January 8, 1932 (Showa 7). On the way back from the Army Review, the Emperor's carriage passed in front of the Metropolitan Police Department at Sakuradamon Gate when a grenade was thrown from the crowd, hitting the carriage of the Minister of the Imperial Household. The perpetrator, a Korean named Lee Bong-chang, had been discriminated against by the Japanese after coming to Japan in 1925 (Taisho 14), and in 1930 travelled to Shanghai to join the Korean Independence Party. After his arrest, he was sentenced to death in a special trial. Prime Minister Inukai Tsuyoshi and all the other cabinet members submitted their resignations after the incident, but the Emperor and elder statesman Saionji Kinmochi decided that all of them would remain in their posts.
