Fudodo ruins

This is a Middle Jomon period ruin located at the end of an uplifted alluvial fan on the right bank of the Kurobe River in Fudodo, Asahi-cho, Shimoniikawa-gun, Toyama Prefecture. Excavations in 1973 (Showa 48) uncovered the remains of a dwelling with an oval plan measuring 17 meters in length and 8 meters in width. With a total floor area of 115 square meters, it was the largest pit dwelling in Japan. Two circular and two square stone hearths were set along the long axis, and 16 pillar holes, each 1 meter in diameter and deep, were neatly dug. This huge structure is not an ordinary dwelling, but is thought to have been a meeting place for a village or several villages, and is important in considering the social structure of the Jomon period. It was designated a National Historic Site in 1974, and the huge dwelling has been restored.
