A perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family that grows in colonies in ponds and lakes (illustration). The stems rise from thick rhizomes that are horizontally embedded in the muddy soil at the bottom of the water, are cylindrical, nodeless, 1.5 m tall, about 1 cm wide, and gray-green in color. Occasionally, there are varieties with stems that have yellow and green stripes, and they are called f. zebrinus and are used for ornamental purposes. The leaves form leafless sheaths that encase the base of the stem. At the end of summer, the plant produces pseudolateral inflorescences a few centimeters below the top of the stem. The parts that appear to be a continuation of the stem above the inflorescence are bracts. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
