Yoshiro Taniguchi

Architect. Born in Kanazawa. Graduated from the Department of Architecture at Tokyo Imperial University in 1928 (Showa 3). After completing graduate studies there, he became a lecturer at the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1930, and an associate professor the following year. After studying in Europe, he became a professor in 1943, and continued his design work while mentoring the next generation of architects until his retirement in 1965. His main works include the Toson Memorial Museum (1947) and the Tokyo National Museum Toyokan (1968), as well as numerous literary monuments. He also served as a member of the Cultural Properties Protection Council, and was instrumental in establishing the Meiji Mura Museum, becoming its first director. He became a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1987, and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1973.

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo
Founded in 1952 (Showa 27), it is Japan's first national art museum. In 1969, it moved to a section of Kitanomaru Park, and the building was designed by architect Yoshiro Taniguchi. The museum's collection includes over 9,000 pieces of painting, sculpture, prints, and photography, with 200-250 pieces on permanent display. 建築家。金沢に生まれる。1928年(昭和3)東京帝国大学建築学科卒業。同大学院を修了後、30年東京工業大学講師、翌年助教授となる。ヨーロッパ留学後43年に教授となり、65年の退官まで後進の指導にあたるかたわら設計活動を続けた。おもな作品に藤村(とうそん)記念館(1947)、東京国立博物館東洋館(1968)などの建築のほか、多数の文学碑がある。また、文化財保護審議委員を務め、博物館明治村の設立に尽力し初代館長となる。62年日本芸術院会員、73年文化勲章受章。
