Yasuna

Japanese:
Yasuna

Kabuki dance. Kiyomoto. This is a passage from the Shichihenge dance "Miyama no hana todo kanue daburi" performed by Onoe Kikugoro III at the Miyakoza in Edo in March 1818 (Bunka 15). The lyrics were written by Shinoda Kinji, the music by Kiyozawa Mankichi (the first Kiyomoto Saibei), and the choreography by Fujima Shinzaburo and Fujima Daisuke (the second Kanjuro). This dance is based on the second act of the Joruri play "Ashiya Doman Ouchi Kagami," in which Abe no Yasuna goes insane over the death of his lover Sakaki no Mae, and wanders the spring fields clutching a keepsake kosode. It has been passed down as a masterpiece of Kiyomoto, and the dance was lost at the end of the Edo period, but was revived by Ichikawa Danjūrō IX in the Meiji period, and became very popular in the Taisho period when Ichikawa Kikugoro VI began directing with fantastical stage sets and an emphasis on psychological portrayal. There is also an old-fashioned version involving a slave.
