This mountain range is located at the northeastern edge of the European Alps, on the outskirts of Vienna, the capital of Austria. It belongs to the flysch (sandstone) zone that is unique to the northern Alps, but part of the southeastern part is made up of limestone. The highest peak is Mount Schepple (890 meters). It is bordered to the west by the Grosse Thuring River, to the north by the Turnerfeld River and the Danube River, to the east by the Vienna Basin, and to the south by the Triesting and Gelsen Rivers. The northeastern part belongs to the Vienna city area, and is connected by the highland motorway, making it a resort area for Viennese citizens to have villas and take walks. The eastern slopes are covered with vineyards, the northern slopes with beech forests interspersed with pastures, and the southern slopes with pine forests. This area was a protected forest and no-hunting zone for a long time, so a rich natural environment remains.
