Surging - Surging (English spelling)

Vibrations on the water surface of a surge tank caused by fluctuations in the amount of water used at a dam-type hydroelectric power plant. When the amount of water used at a dam-type hydroelectric power plant changes, U-shaped pipe vibrations occur between the reservoir and the surge tank, which are connected by a pressure tunnel, causing the water surface in the surge tank to repeatedly rise and fall. This is called surging. Surging is one element of the wave-induced motion (translational motion, rotational motion) of a floating body, and translational motion (back and forth rocking) in the direction of wave travel is also called surging.

In mechanical engineering, when a pump or blower is operated with pipes connected, the pressure, flow rate, rotation speed, required power, etc. fluctuate periodically under certain operating conditions, causing a kind of self-excited vibration. This phenomenon is called surging. If surging occurs, it can make the pump unstable and cause danger. To prevent this, it is necessary to take measures such as considering the shape of the blades, appropriately changing the flow rate and rotation speed to avoid the surging point, and appropriately changing the capacity of the air chamber in the middle of the pipe and the pipe resistance.

ダム水路式水力発電所の使用水量の変動によって生ずるサージタンクの水面振動。ダム水路式水力発電所の使用水量が変化すると、圧力トンネルで結ばれた貯水池とサージタンクの間にU字管振動が生じ、サージタンクの水面が上昇、下降を繰り返す。これをサージングという。浮体の波による運動（並進運動、回転運動）の一要素で、波の進行方向の並進運動（前後揺れ）もサージングという。

　機械工学でも、ポンプや送風機にある管路をつないで運転すると、ある運転状態で圧力・流量・回転数・所要動力などが周期的に変動し、一種の自励振動をおこすことをサージング現象という。サージング現象がおこると、ポンプの運動を不安定にし、危険を生ずる場合がある。その防止のために、羽根の形状を考慮する、流量・回転数を適当に変えサージング点を避ける、管路の途中にある空気室の容量や管路抵抗を適当に変える、などの方法をとる必要がある。
