Mount Hakken

The main peak of the Omine mountain range, rising on the border between Tenkawa Village and Kamikitayama Village in Yoshino County, Nara Prefecture. At 1,915 meters above sea level, it is the highest peak in Honshu west of Kinki. It is also called Hakkyogatake or Butsukyougatake because it is said that En no Gyoja buried eight volumes of the Lotus Sutra here. Since ancient times, it has been one of the training sites for the Omine Shugendo sect. From Hakkensan to Myojogatake to the southwest, there is a habitat for Shiroyamarenge, and the spruce and fir forest on the eastern slope, known as Butsukyougatake Primeval Forest, is both designated as a national natural monument.

奈良県吉野郡天川(てんかわ)村と上北山(かみきたやま)村の境界にそびえる大峰山脈の主峰。標高1915メートルで、本州では近畿以西の最高峰。役行者(えんのぎょうじゃ)が『法華経(ほけきょう)』八巻を埋納したと伝えられることから八経ヶ岳(はっきょうがたけ)、ほかに仏経ヶ岳ともいう。古来、大峰修験道(しゅげんどう)の行場の一つ。八剣山から南西の明上(みょうじょう)ヶ岳にかけてはオオヤマレンゲの自生地があり、東側山腹のトウヒとシラベの樹林帯「仏経岳原始林」はともに国の天然記念物に指定されている。
