Chijimizasa - Chijimizasa

Japanese: チヂミザサ - ちぢみざさ
Chijimizasa - Chijimizasa

It is an annual plant of the grass family (APG classification: Poaceae). The culm branches at the base, creeps above ground, and grows diagonally upwards, reaching a height of 10-30 cm. The leaves are lanceolate, 3-7 cm long, 1-1.5 cm wide, and have slightly wavy edges. From August to October, the culm apex bears a raceme of 6-10 very short flower spikes. The spikelets are about 3 mm long and contain two flowers. The first glume has a thick, upright awn. It grows in colonies in forests on the plains and hills throughout Japan, and is widely distributed in warm regions of Asia, Africa, and Europe. Its name comes from the fact that its leaves resemble bamboo grass and have wavy edges. A closely related species, Sasa edauchijimi, has flower spikes that are 2-7 cm longer.
