A species of mammal in the family Vespertilionidae in the order Chiroptera. In a broader sense, it is a general term for bats in the genus Myotis . This genus is the most widely distributed of the order Chiroptera, with the most species, about 100, accounting for about one-third of the Vespertilionidae. In other words, their distribution ranges from the subarctic to the tropics, excluding the polar regions and some oceanic islands, and they live in forests, deserts, and at the tree line. In Japan, they are found from Hokkaido to Yakushima, but not in the islands of Izu, Ogasawara, Amami, Okinawa, or Yaeyama. There are 12 species in Japan, accounting for about one-third of the bats found in Japan. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
