A long, narrow island stretching from east to west in western Indonesia, northeast of Java, separated by a narrow strait. It has long been considered to be one with Java. The terrain is dominated by limestone hills, and the climate is dry and the soil is not good. However, over 80% of the total area is cultivated. Cattle farming is also popular, and salt is also produced. The inhabitants are Madurese, many of whom have migrated to the main island of Java to work. The capital is Pamekasan on the central south coast. Area ^{4,470 km2} . Population approximately 2.5 million.

インドネシア西部，ジャワ島の北東方に狭い海峡をはさんで東西に細長くのびる島。古くからジャワと一体をなすものとされた。地形は石灰岩の丘陵が多く，気候は乾燥し地味はよくない。しかし全面積の80％以上が耕地化されている。牧牛も盛ん。製塩も行われる。住民はマドゥラ人でジャワ本島へ移住，出稼ぎするものが多い。主都は中央南岸のパメカサン。4470km²。約250万人。
