Its Japanese name means Chestnut Bur (chestnut bur), and it is an annual grass (illustration) with thorns and chestnut bur-shaped spikelets. It is native to tropical America, but has now spread to tropical regions around the world, and was naturalized in Japan after World War II. 和名は栗の毬(いが)の意味で,とげが生えてクリのいがの形をした小穂をもつイネ科の一年草(イラスト)で,熱帯アメリカの原産であるが,現在は世界中の熱帯にひろがり,日本には第2次大戦後に帰化した。茎は高さ30~90cmくらいで,立ち上がり,基部で多少枝分れしている。線形の葉は幅8mm,長さ20cmくらいである。花序は長さ5~10cmくらいの直立した穂状花序で,20~50個のクリのいが状の小穂を密につける。
