Sandbur

Japanese: クリノイガ（英語表記）sandbur

Its Japanese name means Chestnut Bur (chestnut bur), and it is an annual grass (illustration) with thorns and chestnut bur-shaped spikelets. It is native to tropical America, but has now spread to tropical regions around the world, and was naturalized in Japan after World War II. The stem is about 30-90 cm tall, erect, and slightly branched at the base. The linear leaves are about 8 mm wide and 20 cm long. The inflorescence is an upright spike about 5-10 cm long, and is densely packed with 20-50 chestnut bur-shaped spikelets.

和名は栗の毬（いが）の意味で，とげが生えてクリのいがの形をした小穂をもつイネ科の一年草（イラスト）で，熱帯アメリカの原産であるが，現在は世界中の熱帯にひろがり，日本には第2次大戦後に帰化した。茎は高さ30～90cmくらいで，立ち上がり，基部で多少枝分れしている。線形の葉は幅8mm，長さ20cmくらいである。花序は長さ5～10cmくらいの直立した穂状花序で，20～50個のクリのいが状の小穂を密につける。
