Futaba Mugura - Futaba Mugura

Japanese: フタバムグラ - ふたばむぐら
Futaba Mugura - Futaba Mugura

An annual plant of the Rubiaceae family (APG classification: Rubiaceae). The stem is round and thin, 5-40 cm tall. The leaves are linear and 1-3.5 cm long. A single flower grows in each leaf axil. In Japan, it blooms in the summer, but in the tropics, it blooms and bears fruit all year round. The corolla is white, tubular, with four lobes, and 2-3 mm long. The ovary is inferior and has two chambers. The fruit is spherical with pointed sepals and contains many small seeds. It is widely distributed in Japan, East Asia, and tropical Asia. It is named after the fact that it resembles a cleaver and has two leaves. In China, it is used as a medicine for bruises.

There are more than 300 species in the Diptera genus, distributed mainly in the tropical regions of the world. They are herbs or small shrubs, many of which are used for medicinal purposes in China, and some species are cultivated in India, where their roots are used to produce red and purple dyes.
