Tribal art has been called "primitive art" in the past, but this term has been used more recently because the term "primitive" has no factual basis and is ambiguous in definition. However, tribal art is not a single phenomenon, but has a wide variety of different styles and characteristics. This article discusses tribal art from Africa, Oceania, and North America.
