Tribal art

Tribal art has been called "primitive art" in the past, but this term has been used more recently because the term "primitive" has no factual basis and is ambiguous in definition. However, tribal art is not a single phenomenon, but has a wide variety of different styles and characteristics. This article discusses tribal art from Africa, Oceania, and North America.

The Nok culture arose in Nigeria in Central Africa between 500 BC and 200 AD, and produced simple, clear-cut terracotta figurines.

部族美術はこれまで〈未開美術(プリミティブ･アート)〉とも呼ばれてきたが，〈未開〉という語に事実の裏づけがなく，定義があいまいであるため，最近ではこの名称が用いられる。しかし部族美術は一つの現象をさすわけではなく，互いに異なる多種多様な様式と性格を有している。本項ではアフリカ，オセアニア，北アメリカの部族美術について述べる。
