Sylvano Bussotti

Italian composer. After studying violin, composition and piano at the Cherubini Conservatory in his native Florence, he received private composition lessons from Max Deutsch (1892-1982) in Paris. He won four prizes in the Italian composition competitions of the International Society for Contemporary Music (1961, 1963, 1965, 1972). From 1971 to 1973 he taught the history of musical theatre at the Academy of Fine Arts of L'Aquila. From 1975 to 1977 he was artistic director of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. In 1980 he became a lecturer in composition and musical analysis at the Conservatory of Fiesole. His works were diverse in their technique, including works using sequential composition and aleatoric music using graphic notation, and at the same time showed a tendency towards a synthetic artistic style through his activities in painting, theater and film. His major works include the John Cage-influenced Five Piano Pieces for David Tudor (1959), the chamber mystery play Passion according to Sade (1965-1966), the romantic melodrama Lorenzaccio (1972), the ballet The Crystal (1973), the ballet Phaedra/Heliogabalus (1981), and the melodrama Inspiration (1988).

イタリアの作曲家。生地フィレンツェのケルビーニ音楽院でバイオリン、作曲、ピアノを学んだのち、パリでマックス・ドイッチュMax Deutsch（1892―1982）に作曲の個人教授を受けた。国際現代音楽協会イタリア支部の作曲コンクールに4回入賞（1961、1963、1965、1972）。1971～1973年ラクイラ美術アカデミーで音楽劇の歴史の講座を担当。1975～1977年ベネチアのフェニーチェ歌劇場の芸術監督。1980年フィエーゾレ音楽院の作曲、音楽分析の講師に就任した。彼の作品は、音列作法によるものや図形楽譜による偶然性の音楽など、手法のうえで多様であると同時に、絵画、舞台、映画での活動を通して総合芸術的傾向を示していた。おもな作品として、ジョン・ケージの影響を受けた『デービッド・チューダーのための五つのピアノ曲』（1959）、室内神秘劇『サドによる受難曲』（1965～1966）、ロマンティック・メロドラマ『ロレンザッチョ』（1972）、バレエ『水晶』（1973）、バレエ『フェードラ／ヘリオガバルス』（1981）、メロドラマ『霊感』（1988）などがある。
