Ear-picking grass - Ear-picking grass

Japanese: ミミカキグサ - みみかきぐさ
Ear-picking grass - Ear-picking grass

An annual plant of the Utricularia family (APG classification: Utricularia family). Its white, thread-like underground stems crawl through shallow mud, with small insect-trapping sacs scattered throughout, which capture and digest tiny animals. The aboveground leaves are linear and small, 0.6-1 cm long. The flower stalk is thin, 7-15 cm tall, and sparsely covered with scaly leaves. From August to October, it produces several small yellow flowers with small pedicels. The spur of the corolla curves diagonally downward. After flowering, the calyx grows larger and encases the fruit, forming an earpick shape. The name comes from this resemblance to an earpick. It grows in muddy marshes in hilly and mountainous areas, and is distributed from Honshu to Okinawa, as well as China, India, Malaysia, and Australia.
