An appendage, such as a leg, that protrudes from an animal's body. The verrucas of annelids (such as lugworms) are found on almost every body segment and are considered to be the prototype of appendages. In tardigrades and other animals, they develop into clawed feet with hooks at the end, and in arthropods, they become articulated limbs with joints. However, some body segments lack appendages, and only certain appendages develop or change in particular to become fully functional, such as walking or holding. Antennae and mouthparts are also modified appendages. In vertebrates, they are called appendages, and are broadly divided into median limbs in the center of the body and paired limbs on the left and right, including the fins of fish.
