This refers to a joint that is easily dislocated by an external force that does not normally occur. More accurately, it should be called recurrent dislocation, but is usually called habitual dislocation. Habitual dislocations occur in the shoulder, jaw, and knee joints, but the most common is the shoulder joint. Dislocations often occur when the upper limb is raised and externally rotated (as when serving in tennis). Once a traumatic shoulder dislocation occurs after a fall, the likelihood of dislocating again is said to be 70%, making it more likely to become habitual.
