...Awa was the base of the Hosokawa and Miyoshi clans, and since the Nanboku-cho period, high priests from the Five Mountains and renga poets have frequently visited, and the cultural level of the samurai class was high. Also unique to Awa are the Awaitahi, or Awa-ita monuments. These are stone memorial stupas made from blue stone, a specialty of Awa.
