Fujiwara Palace

Japanese:
Fujiwara Palace
Fujiwara-kyo was the imperial palace of Japan's ancient capital for 16 years, from 694 (the 8th year of the reign of Jito) until 710 (the 3rd year of the reign of Wadō) when the capital was moved to Heijō. The site of the palace is located in the area around Takadono-chō, Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture, in the central north of the capital. Until then, it had been customary for the Asuka period for the palace to change hands with each successive emperor, or to change hands several times in a single generation, but Fujiwara-no-miya was unique in that it was passed down to three emperors, Jito, Mommu, and Genmei. The period of Fujiwara-no-miya was an important period when the Asuka Kiyomihara Code and the subsequent Taiho Code were compiled and enacted, establishing a centralized ancient state under the Ritsuryo system. With the expansion of political structures based on the Ritsuryo system, a grand capital city became essential.
