1883‐1976 A Swiss-born physicist who was active in Germany. He studied electron emission and rectification phenomena, and invented the shielded-grid tetrode vacuum tube, which provides stable high-frequency amplification. Born in Zurich, he studied under M. Planck at the University of Berlin. He served as a professor at the University of Rostock and directed the Siemens communications research laboratory. He studied electron emission from metals into vacuum, and published a theory of Schottky emission that takes into account image forces, and elucidated vacuum tube noise caused by non-uniformity in electron emission. He also studied contact between semiconductors and metals, and proposed the Schottky barrier theory and diffusion rectification theory around 1939.
