Wakaejima Island

Japanese:
Wakaejima Island
This Kamakura-era island was built as a port facility at the tip of Cape Iijima along Zaimokuza Coast in Kamakura, Sagami Province. In 1232, the sainted monk O-Amidabutsu made a vow to build the island for the safety and convenience of ships docking, and with the permission of the shogunate, it was built in about 20 days. Materials for repairing Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine were landed here, and Chinese ships also came to the port. In 1349, following the precedent set by Ninsho, the elders of Gokurakuji Temple were granted the right to repair the island and collect rice taxes from Iijima. Prior to this, in 1307, the monks of Gokurakuji Temple, who were the inspectors of the Wagae checkpoint, had filed a complaint against the residents of Wagae for theft of rice and other disturbances, and it is certain that the island was under the control of Gokurakuji Temple at the end of the Kamakura period. During the Edo period, it was also used as an anchorage for ships carrying materials for repairing Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, and the island was also restored. It was also a mooring point for fishing boats from the surrounding villages, and there were disputes over the ownership of the island. It is the only surviving site of a port built in the Kamakura period, and has been designated a national historic site.
