A Belgian Catholic missionary known for his devoted service to lepers. His real name was Joseph de Veuster. He joined the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Congregation, traveled to Hawaii, and became a priest in 1864. In 1873, he volunteered to serve at a leper asylum on the island of Molokai, where he cared for about 800 sick people both physically and mentally. When he himself became infected with leprosy in 1884, he decided to remain on the island with the sick rather than receive treatment. He continued his volunteer work until just before his death, fighting misunderstandings and slander both within and outside the congregation.

癩者への献身的な奉仕で有名なベルギーのカトリック宣教師。本名はJoseph de Veuster。イエズス･マリア聖心修道会に入り，ハワイに渡って1864年司祭になる。73年，志願してモロカイ島の癩病人収容施設におもむき，物心両面にわたって約800人の病人を世話し，84年みずからも感染するや，治療を受けるよりは，病人たちとともに島にとどまる決意をする。修道会内外の誤解，中傷と戦いながら，死の直前まで奉仕活動を続けた。
