1840‐89 A Belgian Catholic missionary known for his devoted service to lepers. His real name was Joseph de Veuster. He joined the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Congregation, traveled to Hawaii, and became a priest in 1864. In 1873, he volunteered to serve at a leper asylum on the island of Molokai, where he cared for about 800 sick people both physically and mentally. When he himself became infected with leprosy in 1884, he decided to remain on the island with the sick rather than receive treatment. He continued his volunteer work until just before his death, fighting misunderstandings and slander both within and outside the congregation.
