Fujiwara Headmaster - Fujiwara no Norinaga

Japanese: 藤原教長 - ふじわらののりなが
Fujiwara Headmaster - Fujiwara no Norinaga

A poet and calligrapher from the late Heian period. His father was the Second Rank Dainagon Fujiwara Tadanori, and his mother was the daughter of Minamoto Toshiakira. He rose to the rank of Third Rank Councilor. As a close aide to Emperor Sutoku, he contributed to the "Kyuan Hyakushu" (One Hundred Poems of the Kyuan Era), but after the Hogen Rebellion he was exiled to Hitachi Province (Ibaraki Prefecture), where he became a monk and took the name Kanren. In 1162 (Oho 2), he was pardoned and returned to Kyoto, and later retired to Koyasan, but he continued his waka poetry activities, and in 1177 (Jisho 1), he gave a lecture on the "Kokinshu" (Collection of Ancient and Modern Japanese Poets) and wrote the "Commentary on the Kokinshu" (Collection of Ancient and Modern Japanese Poets). He died in 1980 (Jisho 4), after submitting his last poem to the "Wakeikazuchisha Utaawase" on March 15 of the following year. His style of poetry is straightforward but profound. His family anthology includes the "Hindoshu" and his anthology "Shui Kokin" (lost), and as a calligrapher he preserves the originals of Imakigire's "Kokinshu" and Futarasan's "Gosenshu", as well as Jubokudo's "Saiyosho".
