A type of coated paper in which paint or synthetic resin is applied to one or both sides of base paper, dried, and then usually passed through a super calendar (a type of device that adds gloss to paper). Generally, the amount of coating is less than that of art paper, but more than that of light-weight coated paper. It is a special product name in Japan. Usually, the base paper for coated paper is made of high-quality paper, but medium-quality coated paper is made of medium-quality paper. Coating for coated paper usually involves a paint made of a mixture of white or light-colored mineral pigments and adhesives such as casein, modified starch, or synthetic resin. Coated paper has a smooth, glossy surface and produces a great printing effect, so it is used in place of art paper in high-quality printing such as multi-color printing.
