In the old days it was called nihonzuna or nihonnawa, and it was common to use two ropes, but later the ipponzuna (single rope) came into existence. After an acrobat named Hitotsuna Kumenosuke performed iainuki on a single rope in 1737 (Genbun 2), the nihonzuna gradually fell out of use. …
