Ahmet Nedim

Ahmet Nedim

A court poet of the Ottoman Empire. Born in Istanbul. He studied at a madrasah (an Islamic institution of higher education) and became a judge, but gained fame as a poet who expressed the glamorous "Tulip Age" (1718-30). Under the patronage of Grand Vizier Ibrahim Paşa (?-1730), he composed poems for many banquets. His style is magnificent, making full use of the techniques of difficult court poetry, and he conveys well the life of Istanbul at that time. Later, the "Nedim Collection of Poems" (1922) was compiled.
