Gaius Valerius Flaccus Balbus Setinus

Gaius Valerius Flaccus Balbus Setinus
A Roman poet active in the second half of the 1st century during the early Roman Empire. His life is unknown. He is known as the author of the heroic epic poem "Argonautica," and in 1416, Poggio Bracciolini of Florence discovered a copy of it at the Abbey of San Gall. However, the work stops at the scene in Book 8, where Medea's brother Absyrtus pursues the Argo, and the rest of the book remains undiscovered. The work is based on the Alexandrian epic poem of the same name by Apollonius (of Rhodes), but rather than simply imitating it, he puts effort into describing the characters' personalities and expressing their emotions, and in particular, the heroic image of Jason far surpasses that of Apollonius.
