Saki

Japanese: 佐紀 - さき

A general term for the area in the northern part of Nara City, including the current areas of Saki-cho, Utahime-cho, and Misasagi-cho. Since ancient times, it has been valued as a transportation route from the Nara Basin to the north, and there are many large ancient tombs in the Saki (Saki) Sakitanami Tomb Group. Under the Ritsuryo system, Saki-go was established, and the name Saki-mura also appears separately. The Manyoshu contains a poem about Prince Naga's Saki Palace. Saki Shrine and Saki Pond have also existed in this area since ancient times, and the latter is said to have been an attached garden and pond to Heijo Palace. [Kushigi Kenshu]

奈良市の北部，現在の佐紀町，歌姫町，山陵（みささぎ）町付近一帯の総称。古くから奈良盆地から北への交通路として重視され，佐紀(狭城)楯列（さきたたなみ）古墳群として大型古墳が多数存在する。律令制のもとでは佐紀郷がおかれ，別に佐岐村の名称もみえる。《万葉集》には長皇子（ながのみこ）の佐紀宮での歌がある。この地にはほかに佐紀神社，佐紀池が古代から存在し，後者は平城宮の付属園池とされていたらしい。【櫛木謙周】
