King of France (reigned 1515-1547). Cousin of Louis XII. Domestically, he worked to strengthen the monarchy, and externally, he fought the Italian Wars against Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. He worked hard to protect and nurture the arts and literature, and is called the "Father of the French Renaissance."
