King of Portugal (reigned 1279-1325). The sixth king of the House of Burgundy, commonly known as Lavrador the Farmer. He succeeded his father Afonso III (1210-1279, reigned 1248-1279), who conquered the southern Algarve and completed the Reconquista of Portugal, and in 1297 concluded the Treaty of Alcañices with Castile, determining the borders that are almost the same as today. In an era of peace, colonization was encouraged within the country, and the capital Lisbon developed as an international trading port. He reorganized the Knights Templar as the Knights of Christ, placing them under the control of the royal authority, suppressing the power of the aristocracy, and working to strengthen the royal authority. During his reign, the golden age of medieval culture also came about, the University of Coimbra was founded, and Portuguese became the official language. The king himself was famous as a poet.

ポルトガル王（在位1279～1325）。ブルゴーニュ朝第6代の王で、通称は農夫王o Lavrador。南部アルガルベを征服してポルトガルのレコンキスタ（国土回復戦争）を完了した父王アフォンソ3世Afonso Ⅲ（1210―1279、在位1248～1279）の後を継ぎ、1297年カスティーリャとアルカニセス条約を結んで、ほぼ現在と同じ国境を決定した。平和の時代を迎えて国内の植民が奨励され、首都リスボンは国際的な貿易港として発展した。テンプル騎士団をキリスト騎士団として再編し、王権の支配下に置いて貴族勢力を抑え、王権の強化に努めた。王の治世下、文化面でも中世文化の黄金時代を迎え、コインブラ大学が創設され、ポルトガル語が公用語となった。王自身詩人として有名である。
