A city in the southeastern part of Hyogo Prefecture, occupying the upper and middle reaches of the Inagawa River. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The southern part is part of the Osaka Plain, with a central city that developed as a river port, and it is a twin city of Ikeda City in Osaka Prefecture across the Inagawa River. It is served by the Fukuchiyama Line and the Hankyu Takarazuka Line, and has rapidly developed as a residential satellite city of Osaka since the 1960s, with industries such as dyeing and bleaching using the water of the Inagawa River, and leather, thriving. Fruit trees such as figs and peaches are also cultivated in the surrounding area, as well as plantations. The Nose Electric Railway branches off to Nose Myoken on the northern border. 兵庫県南東部,猪名川上・中流域を占める市。1954年市制。南部は大阪平野の一部で,河港として発達した中心市街があり,猪名川を隔てて大阪府池田市と双子都市をなす。福知山線,阪急宝塚線が通じ,1960年代から大阪市の住宅衛星都市として急速に発展,猪名川の水による染色・晒(さらし),皮革などの工業が盛ん。周辺ではイチジク,モモなどの果樹・植木栽培も行われる。北境の能勢妙見へ能勢電鉄が分岐。多田は多田源氏発祥地。53.44km2。15万6423人(2010)。
