Year of death: 23 March 1035 (3 May 1035) Year of birth: Kōhō 4 (967) A nobleman and poet in the mid-Heian period. His name was also known as "Narinobu." He was the son of the daughter of the Grand Minister of State, Tamemitsu, and Fujiwara no Atsutoshi. In 996, he became a councilor, and five years later, surpassed his older brother, Masanobu, to become provisional Chunagon. According to the "Okagami," his older brother was greedy and unpopular, and wanted to be appointed himself, so he asked his younger brother, Narinobu, to withdraw from applying for Chunagon. However, when Michinaga told Masanobu that there was no hope for him, the popular Narinobu applied for Chunagon and was appointed. It is said that his resentful older brother died in agony. In 1020, he was promoted to Dainagon. He was also highly trusted by Michinaga, and served as Chugu no Daifu (Middle Palace Minister) to Michinaga's daughters, Shoshi and Takeshi, and Togu no Daifu (Heavenly Palace Minister) to Michinaga's grandson, Prince Atsunari (later Emperor Go-Ichijo). After exchanging letters, Sei Shonagon met To no Chujo Sanenobu in person and, seeing his dazzling formal attire, exclaimed, "So this is the nobleman described so beautifully in stories" (The Pillow Book). He was a brilliant figure in court ceremonies and one of the Four Counselor Officers under Emperor Ichijo.
