An Austrian orientalist and cultural historian. He acquired manuscripts in Arabic and other languages during his travels to the East, and published the original text of Waqidi's Book of Conquests (1856). He then published A History of the Principal Ideas of Islam (1868), which provided an overview of Islamic spiritual culture, and two volumes of The History of Oriental Culture (1875-77), which were attempts to grasp the overall picture of Islam. His other works include a work on Ibn Khaldun (1879). [Yajima Fumio]

オーストリアの東洋学者，文化史家。東方旅行によってアラビア語などの写本を入手し，ワーキディーの《征服の書》原典を刊行(1856)。次いでイスラムの精神文化を概観した《イスラムの主要思想の歴史》(1868)，《オリエント文化史》2巻(1875‐77)を公刊したが，これらはイスラムの全体像を把握する試みであった。ほかにイブン･ハルドゥーンについての著作(1879)などがある。【矢島文夫】
