...Although not commonly used in Japan, electroforming (also called electroplate or electroforming plate) is a mechanical platemaking method in which an electroformed mold (a mold with the inverted projections and recesses made from lead, wax, or plastic) is taken from the master and a metal is electroplated onto the electroformed mold using electrolysis.

This is what is known as the photomechanical process, and most printing is done using this method, except for letterpress and its reproductions. Simply put, photomechanical printing is the creation of plates by making good use of materials that change their properties when they are exposed to light, and it is used for all four types of printing: letterpress, planographic, intaglio, and mimeograph.
