The old term for pancreatic amylase. Amylase is a digestive enzyme that breaks down sugars and is secreted mainly from the salivary glands and pancreas. When the pancreas is damaged, amylase leaks into the blood and urine, so measuring amylase in serum and urine is useful for diagnosing pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer.
