Valerianus (English spelling) Publius Licinius Valerianus

Valerianus (English spelling) Publius Licinius Valerianus

Roman Emperor (reigned 253-260). After gaining fame as a senator and soldier of noble birth, he was proclaimed emperor by the legions of the Rhine. He asked the Senate to appoint his son Gallienus as the second emperor, and for the first time the Roman Empire was divided between two emperors. Threatened by several Gothic invasions, he was forced to deal with the Persian armies that invaded Syria, and was finally captured by the Persian king Shapur I in 260, but the miserable life after his captivity is unclear. It should be noted that the slanderous accusations of him by church fathers are full of exaggerations, as he ordered the persecution of Christians.
