A nobleman in the mid-Heian period. He was the third son of Councillor Tadatoshi. His mother was the daughter of Harima no Kami Fujiwara no Tadafumi. He was adopted by his grandfather Saneyori and inherited the main residence, Ononomiya, and other huge assets, and was called Goononomiya. In 981 (Tengen 4), he became Kurodo no To, and after serving as Councillor, Chunagon, and Dainagon, he was promoted to Minister of the Right in 1021 (Jinji 1) and to Juichii in 1037 (Choureki 1). He died on January 18, 1261 (Kantoku 3). He was intelligent and was called the wise minister of state. He inherited the tradition from his grandfather and was well versed in court customs. In "Zokuhonchoojoden" he is listed as one of the most outstanding court nobles of the Ichijo era. During the heyday of Fujiwara Michinaga, as the direct descendant of the Ononomiya family that began with Saneyori, he considered himself an equal with Michinaga, the grandson of Saneyori's younger brother Morosuke, and did not easily give in to him. However, he did not oppose Michinaga himself, but rather opposed his interference with the Imperial Court, such as in 1012 (Chowa 1), when Michinaga tried to obstruct the enthronement of Emperor Sanjo's consort, Nyogo Seishi, as empress. He was a man of principle who respected the Imperial Court. He left behind a diary, "Shoyuki," and a court customs book, "Ononomiya Nenchu Gyoji."
