Kamo River - Kamogawa

Japanese: 賀茂川∥鴨川 - かもがわ
Kamo River - Kamogawa
It is one of the Yodo River system and flows through Kyoto City. Its source is Kumogahata in Kita Ward, where it joins the Kurama River to enter the Kyoto Basin, then joins the Takano River and flows south through the city, then turns southwest and joins the Katsura River. It is 31 km long and has a drainage area of 209 km2. The Kamo River is written as Kamogawa River up to the confluence with the Takano River, and Kamogawa River downstream. It forms an alluvial fan from Hiiragi-no in Kamigamo, which is the outlet into the Kyoto Basin, to the south, and much of the river water flows underground and becomes the source of water for wells in Kyoto City. Kamogawara is famous for its purification rituals, battlefields, and execution sites, but from the end of the Middle Ages to the early modern period it became a square where common people gathered, and entertainment districts with theaters and show tents were formed in Shijogawara and Gojogawara.
