Fujiwara Kunitsuna - Fujiwara no Kuni Tsuna

Japanese:
Fujiwara Kunitsuna - Fujiwara no Kuni Tsuna

An aristocrat in the late Heian period. His father, Morikuni, only served as Uma Gonnosuke, and Kunitsuna himself began his official career as Monjosho in 1135 (Hōen 1). Although he was not blessed with a family background in aristocratic society, he served as kokushi and kurōdo in various provinces, and in 1166 (Jin'an 1) he became a councilor and was ranked among the nobles. In 1177 (Jishō 1), he was promoted to Gon Dainagon. He was highly valued as a household steward by Fujiwara Tadamichi of the regent family, but he also had a close relationship with Taira no Kiyomori, and when Tadamichi's eldest son, Motozane, died in 1166, it was Kunitsuna's suggestion that his widow, Moriko, Kiyomori's daughter, inherited his estate. He was criticized by the regent family, but Kiyomori trusted him highly, and his subsequent activities were as a pro-Taira noble. She served as a wet nurse for Emperor Takakura and Emperor Antoku, and was close to the mainstream of the Imperial family at the time. In particular, when the capital was moved from Fukuhara to Heian-kyo in 1180 (Jisho 4), she was a close aide to Takakura and helped persuade the reluctant Kiyomori. She was a capable official, and was highly respected by the people for her wealth.
